*The correct title of this article is xAIML hierarchy. To avoid letting the initial letter be capitalized due to technical restrictions with WikiMedia, we have prepended a "*" (asterisk) to the title.

The xAIML hierarchy is the hierarchy of all xAIML dialects in the world, with xAIML0 at the root. This is not meant to suggest that there is any centralized registry of xAIML dialects, nor that the existence of any particular xAIML dialect must be disclosed throughout the world. On the contrary, the arrangement works just fine for private derivations. Much as, for example, every class in Java subclasses java.lang.Object either directly or indirectly, without any need to be "publicly exposed" to the world, so too do all xAIML dialects derive from xAIML0. The reason for this is that xAIML0 thereby provides a guaranteed basis of comparison between any two xAIML dialects, should it happen that they share no other common ancestor.
